Coordinated Analysis of Astromaterials Workshop
May 13-15, 2025
Tucson, Arizona
We cordially invite researchers to participate in an in-person workshop on the coordinated analysis of astromaterials. The workshop is scheduled for May 13-15, 2025, in Tucson, Arizona, at the University of Arizona’s Kuiper-Arizona Laboratory for Astromaterials Analysis (K-ALFAA). Participants will receive both hands-on and instructional training in analyzing planetary materials using various types of instrumentation to coordinate data sets. This training opportunity is limited to 5 to 10 participants to ensure personalized instruction. The workshop is open to anyone interested in sample science, particularly early career researchers such as graduate students and postdocs.
Overview
The analysis of planetary materials offers insights into the chemical and physical origins of our solar system. To maximize the acquisition of diverse data sets from these samples, it is essential to coordinate the analytical methods employed to measure them. This coordinated analysis has gained particular significance over the past two decades with the return of cometary and asteroidal samples. Given the limited mass returned by missions like Hayabusa and OSIRIS-REx, it is vital to extract the maximum amount of information from these precious samples.
Targeted Skills
The workshop will focus on the various skills required to optimize and coordinate micro- to nanoscale analysis of planetary materials. Both practical and classroom instruction will be provided. The principles and skills include:
- Analytical Tools (Electron microprobe analysis, focused-ion-beam scanning electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry, and transmission electron microscopy)
- Analytical Approach
- Sample preparation
- Workflow
- Data processing and spatial co-registry of different data sets
- Data management and archiving
